Combined Waterproofing System for a Community Hub, Chesterfield:  Barrier Protection, Drained Protection and Waterproofing the Concrete Slab

Damptec Systems Ltd has recently completed work creating a useable space in a basement in a Chesterfield community centre.

We recommended a combined waterproofing system as there was a potential risk of water building up behind the structure. The system included:

  • Type A: Barrier Protection – internal waterproofing
  • Type C: Drained Protection – internal waterproofing

DAMPTEC SYSTEMS LTD’S SPECIFICATION

Internal: Type A (Barrier) Protection

Type A waterproofing ‘barrier’ system applied to the internal blockwork structure.

  1. Application of primer to all surfaces in a spray coat application.
  2. Installation of fillet seals at the base of the bund using repair mortar. The use of fillet seals helps to ensure a smooth transition between horizontal and vertical surfaces to minimise the risk of leaving gaps or holes unsealed during the waterproofing works.
  3. Application of two coats of Newton Hydrocoat Tanking Slurry. This is a cement-based, polymer modified, flexible, protective and waterproof membrane coating.

Internal: Type C (Drained) Protection

Secondary protection, which manages any water ingress which occurs as a consequence of an installation defect, was provided by a cavity drain membrane system and a sump/dual pump station linked to a drainage channel.

Wall Cavity Drain Membranes

We mechanically fixed 8mm membrane to the internal side of the external cavity, taped into the wide DPC.

Waterproofing the Concrete Slab

We recommended using a Type “A” barrier waterproofing protection on the concrete slabs.
